Introduction to Berovo and the Maleshevo Region

Situated in the eastern highlands of North Macedonia along the Bregalnica River, Berovo serves as the peaceful hub of the Maleshevo mountain region. Resting at an elevation between 800 and 900 meters above sea level, the town is celebrated for its dense pine and beech forests, exceptionally clean mountain air, and high oxygen levels. The cooler summer temperatures and verdant alpine setting have earned the area a reputation as an inland natural sanctuary and wellness retreat.

Key Cultural and Historic Landmarks

Berovo’s cultural heritage is anchored by significant religious and civic monuments. On the outskirts of town along the road toward the lake sits the Monastery of the Holy Archangel Michael, an active nunnery dating back to the early 19th century. Built in a traditional architectural style, the complex features a distinctive church with an expansive wooden porch and historic iconography.

Within the town center stands the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, originally constructed in 1912 with an added belfry that gives it a unique presence on the town skyline. Nearby, the Museum of Berovo—housed in a preserved 19th-century former schoolhouse—displays ethnographic artifacts, traditional clothing, regional tools, and historical exhibits illustrating Maleshevo life.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

The focal point for outdoor recreation is Berovo Lake, an artificial reservoir located roughly 6 to 7 kilometers southeast of the municipal center at roughly 1,000 meters altitude. Formed behind a dam on the Ratevska River, the water is enveloped by evergreen forests and scenic shorelines.

Visitors can navigate marked hiking, walking, and mountain biking trails that weave through the surrounding hills and trace the lake perimeter. The reservoir also provides opportunities for recreational sport fishing and kayaking. For expansive panoramic vistas, trekking routes extend into the Maleshevo peaks and reach higher pastoral plateaus such as the Klepalo sheepfold.

Local Experiences and Culinary Traditions

Berovo has long preserved distinct craftsmanship, particularly fine woodcarving. Local woodcarvers are renowned throughout the country for crafting intricate Byzantine-style iconostases, shallow relief carvings, and architectural ornaments from regional timbers.

The Maleshevo culinary landscape is famous for its artisanal dairy products, most notably Berovo cheese (Maleshevo white and bieno sirenje), as well as sheepfold dairy specialties and regional mountain potatoes. Foragers collect wild forest berries, herbs for mountain teas, and natural ingredients used in traditional wellness remedies, such as local pine syrup and honey crafted for respiratory benefits.
